Feminist pickets block roads and streets in Sants, Lesseps and city outskirts

The feminist strike began first thing this morning with pickets in different areas of Barcelona center and outskirts. A picket of women, lesbians and trans cut off Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes at the height of Sants for almost an hour. The blockage ended at 8.30 AM under threat by the Mossos’s riot police to disolved the picket violently. Nevertheless, mediators managed to prolong it for another fifteen minutes.

Feminist pickets blocked Barcelona’s traffic for an hour this morning, with shouts of “Long live the feminist fight!”. Women, lesbians and trans protesters faced motorists who threatened to run them over if they didn’t make way for traffic. The biggest stress points between protesters, police and citizens have been Sants and Lesseps neighborhoods. Finally, blockages finished at 8.30 AM without women being identified.

In Eixample Esquerra, a picket organized by the March 8th Strike Comittee of the neighborhood currently continues to block the Gran Via / Urgell crossroad, while a picket of 30 women is doing the same in Via Laietana.

Meanwhile, the informative rally #StopPujades (“Stop increases”) blocked open the barricades of the Vallcarca metro station.

Feminist pickets also cut off the Vallès suburban trainline. Protesters have been identified by Mossos’s riot police and detained. In Terrassa, pickets cut off the C58 road.

Events and demostrations will continue throughout the day, including the “Unitary Demonstration” held at midday in Plaça Catalunya and the main march that will take place at 6.30 PM in Barcelona. The latter will set out from Passeig de Gràcia/Diagonal and head to Plaça Universidad. The closing event will be held in Plaça Catalunya at 8 PM.
